Magento 1 End of Life. Time to Move…

It has been more than 12 years now since Magento 1 has been released. It continues to be one of the most used platforms to date, however, time does bring change, and eCommerce has changed since then.

Support for Magento 1 is now coming to an end June 30, 2020. This means bug/security-fixes, patches and updates will no longer be released any longer for this version of Magento.

This forces eCommerce owners on Magento 1 with a tough decision to make. One would be to continue to operate with Magento 1, and take on completely the responsibilities to maintain security themselves. Visa themselves even has published a formal statement suggesting a move from Magento 1 here.

Another path is to move to the new Magento 2 platform. I personally call this move a ‘replatform’ instead of an ‘upgrade’, because of the fact that the architecture is completely different. There is not much in terms of reusability with components built in Magento 1. This includes extensions, customizations, and even the theme. The architecture is different, and these components can be repurposed in Magento 2 format. We can help you with this!

Lastly, there is an option to move from Magento 1 to another platform, such as Shopify, BigCommerce, Salesforce Commerce, or Hybris.

Here at Friends of Commerce, we can help plan, prepare and execute the best next move for your eCommerce business. Will a SaaS solution give your the feature sets you require? Is Magento 2 overkill to your needs? What is my best move? These questions we can help you solve!

Contact us today and we can help determine your next best move, just as a Best Friend would.
